Czech Grand Design Awards Statutes

Basic Provisions

The Czech Grand Design Awards are distributed every year with the aim of supporting and promoting quality projects in the field of Czech design. The awards are presented by the Academy of Design of the Czech Republic for exceptional feats in nine categories:

Designer of the Year - the Award of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic

Fashion Designer of the Year

Jewelry Designer of the Year

Graphic Designer of the Year

Photographer of the Year

Showroom of the Year

Producer of the Year - Award for Industrial Design from Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic

Discovery of the Year

Hall of Fame.

As part of the Czech Grand Design Awards, the Public Award is given based on votes from the general public. The Grand Designer of the Year Award is handed out by the Czech Grand Design Awards Preparatory Committee to the winner of one of the categories for a project which overlaps with other individual categories in the given calendar year.

Czech Grand Design Awards Preparatory Committee

The Preparatory Committee ensures that the importance and prestige of the awards is maintained through its association with respected institutions represented by individual Academy members. The Preparatory Committee canvasses individuals to become Academy and jury members, supervises proper voting procedure, promotes the field of design and its development in the Czech Republic, while also raising cultural and financial support from state institutions and private entities.

The Preparatory Committee members are: Helena Koenigsmarková, PhDr., Director of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague; Jana Zielinski, Director of Designblok and Profil Media, the company which produces the Czech Grand Design Awards; Mgr. Karel Ksandr, Director of the National Technical Museum; Filip Suchomel, PhDr. PhD, AAAD Vice-Dean and Jiří Macek, Creative Director of Designblok and Profil Media.

The Academy of Design of the Czech Republic

Curators, theorists, publicists, along with prominent figures from public life and previous winners of the Czech Grand Design Award can all become members of the Academy of Design of the Czech Republic. The Preparatory Committee invites individuals to become Academy members for the given calendar year and sends them the nomination questionnaire. Individuals agree to become members by sending the completed questionnaire to the Czech Grand Design Awards organizers. In cases where a member does not submit the completed nomination questionnaire to the organizers, he/she is not featured in the Academy list for the given year.

Individuals become Academy members for the sole purpose of voting in the Czech Grand Design Awards in the given calendar year. Membership of the Academy is honorary and voluntary and does not establish any legal relation with the Czech Grand Design Awards organizers.

Juries for Individual Categories

With the exception of interdisciplinary categories (the Hall of Fame and Discovery of the Year), expert juries consisting of 5-7 members, selected from among Academy members by the Preparatory Committee for the given calendar year, assess individual categories – Designer of the Year, Fashion Designer of the Year, Jewelry Designer of the Year, Graphic Designer of the Year, Photographer of the Year, Showroom of the Year and Producer of the Year – based on nominations. Independent theorists, curators, publicists and leading figures from public life, who guarantee expertise and impartiality and who share an extensive knowledge of the latest international developments in the field of design, are asked by the Preparatory Committee to take part in expert juries. Expert juries are responsible for maintaining factual and professional accuracy throughout the nomination process and are entitled to reduce or extend the list of nominees.

The Decision-Making Process

In the first round (i.e. the nomination round), Academy members nominate no more than three nominees – who have been adjudged to have displayed an exceptional level of achievement – in each category. Any nominee to acquire only one nomination is disqualified. The Preparatory Committee then forwards the remaining list of nominees for the next round of decision-making, in compliance with the following criteria:

In the case of the interdisciplinary categories, Discovery of the Year and the Hall of Fame, the voting system remains unchanged from previous years. Academy members vote based on nominations from the first nomination round. In the second voting round, Academy members choose no more than three nominees, deciding on a trio of finalists, i.e. those who get the highest number of votes in the second round. In the third round, Academy members choose the winner from this trio. The winner is the nominee who accrues the highest number of votes out of the trio of finalists.

With regard to Designer of the Year, Fashion Designer of the Year, Jewelry Designer of the Year, Graphic Designer of the Year, Photographer of the Year, Showroom of the Year and Producer of the Year, expert juries appointed from among the Academy members by the Preparatory Committee will then preside over the nomination lists for further assessment. The respective jury sessions result in the announcement of an official list of nominees, finalist trios and winners in individual categories.

The Grand Designer of the Year Award is awarded by the Preparatory Committee, based on consultations with chairpersons of individual juries, to one of the winners in the creative categories, i.e. Designer of the Year, Fashion Designer of the Year, Jewelry Designer of the Year, Graphic Designer of the Year and Photographer of the Year. The award is presented to the designer of a project whose work overlaps with other individual categories in which his/her work is featured, for the given calendar year.
